What needs to be done to help men is to educate them when their PSA rises. Too many men panic in their ignorance because they haven't taken the time to research PC. They often follow poorly given recommendations to have the prostate removed. The reason is their male ego takes control when they hear all the fearful stories that they will lose their sexual manliness. There are numerous Internet resources from message boards, blogs, papers and videos by renowned doctors. The worst thing to do is to rush into treatment blindfolded. I am a twelve year survivor, still have my prostate, and have received several treatment types. The PSA test does need to be checked and the individual should know it as he would his cholesterol and blood pressure. As indicated above...we are our own worst enemy when we ignore our bodies.

    • Dan argues in his latest blog that the USPSTF missed the mark on PSA screening. Though it is imperfect, it is not a failed test. While it is not cancer-specific, it is not a failed test. Judging by your comments and posts yesterday (thanks for sharing)--we think you'll agree with Dan’s entry.

    • The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force made a final recommendation today against PSA screening for healthy men.

We remain committed to our original response--suggesting that PSA screening still plays an important role in detecting early prostate cancer in informed patients, though better guidelines are needed.

What are your thoughts on the USPSTF final recommendation?
